Fox Crochet Bucket Hat Free Pattern

Oh, my stars and garters! Have you folks ever come across something that just screams, “wear me and shine”? This fox crochet bucket hat does just that – and let me tell ya, it’s nothing short of captivating! I can still remember the first time I wrapped my fingers around this pattern; it felt like an adventurous journey through a whimsical woodland, led by this foxy companion.

Honestly, it’s quite the sensation having that dash of woodland charm perched atop your noggin. Every stitch, every loop, it’s like painting a canvas with a fiery hue of fox-red and amber – so vivid and so lifelike. This hat isn’t just a piece of wear, no siree! It’s a conversation starter, a head-turner, and a day-brightener, all rolled into one.

Dive headfirst (pun intended!) into this crochet challenge. And when you emerge on the other side, wearing this darling of a hat? Oh, honey, the world won’t know what hit it…

Pattern Designer: NJK Crochet

  • Bernat blanket yarn in 2 colors
  • 6.5 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Sewing needle

Mr – magic ring
Inc – increase
Sc – single crochet
Hdc – half double crochet
BLO – back loops only
Ch – chain
Dc – double crochet
Sl st – slip stitch
FO – fasten off

The hat and the ruffles are worked completely in half double crochet (This includes the increases: you don’t do a sc inc for the hat and ruffles, you do a hdc inc. This means 2 hdc in the same stitch. However, you do use single crochet for the fox ears.

Rounds17 – 19 (ruffles) the more frequently you increase, the curlier your ruffles will be. If you want extra-curly ruffles, increase every few stitches (ex hdc 2, inc). If you want mire subtle ruffles, increase less frequently (ex hdc 6, inc).

The size of the hat will be different depending on the size of your head, the yarn/hook you use, gets.

Rnd 1: 8 hdc into a Mr (8)
Rnd 2: (hdc, inc) x 4 (12)
Rnd 3: (hdc, inc) x 6 (18)
Rnd 4: (hdc 2, inc) x 6 (24)
Rnd 5: (hdc 3, inc) x 6 (30)
Rnd 6: (hdc 4, inc) x 6 (36)
Rnd 7: (hdc 5, inc) x 6 (42)
Rnd 8: (hdc 6, inc) x 6 (48)
Rnd 9: (hdc 7, inc) x 6 (53)
Rnd 10-11: BLO hdc around (54)
Rnd 12-16: Hdc around (54)
Rnd 17-19: *see pattern notes before completing this round*

For extra ruffly ruffles, alternate between [hdc 1, inc],[hdc 2, inc] and [hdc 3, inc] throughout the round.

For more subtle ruffles, alternate between [hdc 5,inc], [hdc 6, inc] and [hdc 7, inc] throughout the round.

Sl st and FO. Weave in the end securely.

You’ve finished the hat! Now make and sew on the ears.

Ears x2

With orange yarn:

Rnd 1: 6 sc into a Mr (6)
Rnd 2: inc x 6 (12)
Rnd 3: (sc, inc) x 6 (18)
Rnd 4-6: sc around (18)

Sl st and FO, leaving a long tail for sewing.

With white yarn:

Rnd 1: ch 4
Rnd 2: sc into the 2nd ch from the hook. Hdc into the 3rd ch from the hook. Dc into the 4th (last) ch from the hook.

Leave a tail for sewing.

Fold the orange part of the ear in half so it is in the shape of a triangle. Sew the white “inside” of the ear onto the center orange “outside” of the ear.

Sew the ear on between rounds 2. Do the same for the 2nd ear on the other side of the hat. Make sure they’re centered.
