Ah, the memories of tropical holidays come flooding back… If you’re anything like me, you’ll find joy in every stitch of this mesmerizing chameleon pattern. It’s versatile, engaging, and oh-so-adorable!

With his curling tail and vibrant colors, this little critter’s ready to hop right into your heart… or, at the very least, onto your favorite shelf!

Materials & Tools

  • 3.75 mm crochet hook
  • Weight 4 worsted weight yarn in green
  • Safety eyes or brown felt for eyes
  • Stuffing
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Stitch markers

Abbreviations

Ch – chain
St – stitch
Mr – magic ring
Sc – single crochet
BO – booble stitch (yarn over, insert hook, pull up a loop, pull through two loops) x5
Sl st – slip stitch
Inc – increase
Dec – decrease
Sc 3 tog – decrease with 3 st
FO – fasten off

Rnd 1: 6 sc in Mr (6)
Rnd 2: 6 inc (12)
Rnd 3: 4 sc, (sc, inc) x 4 (16)
Rnd 4: 4 sc, (2 sc, inc) x 4 (20)
Rnd 5: 4 sc, (3 sc, inc) x 4 (24)
Rnd 6: 4 sc, (4 sc, inc) x 4 (28)
Rnd 7: 13 sc, 2 dec, sc, 2 dec, 6 sc (24)

Start stuffing the body.

Rnd 17: 7 sc, 3 dec, 1 sc (11)
Rnd 18: sc around (11)
Rnd 19: 1 sc, dec, 8 sc (10)
Rnd 20: sc 3 tog, 7 sc (8)

Finish stuffing the body.

Rnd 21: 3 sc, sc 3 tog, 2 sc (6)

Sc around until the tail is as full as you would like when rolled up (10 to 12 rows)

If sewing: fo and leave a long tail
If gluing: fo and weave in ends

Spikes

Insert hook in center of back between rows 10 and 11 and pull up a loop. (ch 2, sl st into 2nd ch from from hook and sl st into next st in body) x 4

Assembly

  • Is sewing: roll up the tail, pin in place, and use the tail end of the yarn to sew it in place.
  • Hide ends inside body.
  • If gluing: apply a small strip of glue to the inside of the tail and slowly roll up the tail, applying more glue as you go.
